Many women grieve the loss of their womb after a hysterectomy, I should know, I've been there...

I had my full hysterectomy in March 2012.

At the time I was teaching spin and circuit classes in a large corporate gym. Every month I had to pad up; three pairs of shorts and the most absorbent sanitary towels I could buy to prepare myself before getting in front of my class.

My most embarrassing moment and turning point was in the cafe after a class. I had joined friends for a cuppa and a chat after a tough spin class.

I stood up from the white leather seat and it had turned red.

My friends were brilliant and I wiped it quickly with my towel and I almost ran to my car.

I remember crying all the way home.

Enough was enough, I went to the doctors and demanded help. They referred me to a gynaecologist . I was scanned and prodded and poked over several appointments.

I had fibroids…Yippee !

At last I had a reason for the heavy periods.

For two years previous I had suffered with very heavy long periods.

This was something I found difficult to bear because I had never had any problems in my 20’s. 30’s or 40;s.  My periods were always regular, 4 days and no PMT.

I was referred again. A Mirena Coil was discussed but an internal showed the fibroids would have to be removed first as they were too big.

A routine smear was carried out as they were “up there” anyway and a follow up appointment was made .

I was called within a week to say they had a cancellation appointment so could I could I come earlier.

I remember so clearly, arranging to meet my husband and his friend for dinner straight afterwards.

When I went in to see the consultant, in a private hospital there were 2 other nurses with him. I felt very honoured! He was very straight  faced and without hesitation he said…

“the smear had shown early stages of cancer in the womb and it had to be dealt with immediately and he would perform a full hysterectomy on Monday (this was a Thursday ).”

I didn't really take it in and I could hear myself saying something like, Sorry thats not possible as I am leaving Saturday to cycle 400km across Kenya with a wonderful group of women to raise money for  three

Women’s Cancer charities…..

It was decided that as I was away for less than 2 weeks, he would book another time in the day after I got back from Kenya.

It may sound irresponsible to some of you reading this but the challenge suddenly became even more important to me to complete.

I HAD TO DO IT !

I met my husband in a daze and the poor man was in a dreadful state. We sat up all night discussing it and he finally agreed that I needed to complete this cycle challenge. It was an amazing, humbling experience and everyone had a story to tell…

WE DID IT ! CYCLED 400KM

I had no preparation for the surgery I was about to undergo. No information about the changes in the body afterwards, no information about the different types of hysterectomies , no information about my healing process. Nothing…

It was a successful operation and they were able to do it with key hole surgery, which I was grateful for.

I was discharged the next day and told not to lift anything and take it easy for 4-6 weeks and walk little and often and rest when I needed too. No driving and no other exercise for 6 weeks.

I went home on a bit of a high because I was alive and my womb with the nasty cells in had been removed.

I was free of Cancer and free of my monthly nightmares .

A month of visitors, reading, resting, light duties went so quick and I went back to work after 5 weeks but I was very careful when lifting anything. I left that to my clients.

I wish I had been more prepared for the changes that were about to hit me after the feeling of euphoria .

I was in a surgical menopause.

Please read my menopause blog to find out more about the next stage.

However for now, My advice would be this:

  • Ask why do I need a hysterectomy?
  • Research before surgery, find out about the type of surgery recommended . Why that type ?
  • Can you keep your ovaries? If not why not ?
  • Are you removing my cervix?
  • Get clarity.
  • How will the procedure be done?

Vaginally, abdominal surgery or keyhole

  • Ask about what you can expect during your recovery and where can you seek more help

Ask, Ask Ask as much as you can. Be armed with information that will help you recover as quickly as possible.

I have mapped out my hysterectomy course to give you the step by step blueprint to help you before your surgery, after your surgery and during your recovery

I have been having personal training from Julie Bartlett for 8-9 years. What would I have been like if she had not trained me all these years? Simples! Fat, unfit and with very low self-esteem!

Initially, I was a bit uncertain as to how she could train me in her studio without all the equipment that one has in a good gym. But I was in a rut doing the same old exercises in the gym and feeling dead bored and desperately needed to make changes or I might well have given up exercising altogether. Well, I need not have worried as Julie does not need heavy equipment to train a person. Her innovative methods of using just simple weights and other paraphernalia works up more of a sweat than any fancy machine in a gym.

The best thing about Julie is her motivation and sheer enthusiasm for life and good health which is very infectious, and her advice about exercise and diet is always well researched and tailor-made for each individual.

Julie has no great respect for age (!), and I mean this in the nicest possible way! She firmly believes that anyone, whatever their age, should extend themselves to their highest ability. I am 65 years old and she has got me doing things I never thought I could do and it feels FANTASTIC! If you have not signed up with Julie, what are you waiting for?!!!

" Working with Julie has showed us we can have fun working out as a couple . Every week we are shown that we can do more than we believed we could "

Working out with Julie has not only helped me to be active, fitter than ever in my life, but the personalized training sessions gave me confidence to play in any position in cricket from bowling, opening batting to wicket keeping these days.

I had lost hopes of playing cricket or any other outdoor sport after knee injury in 2012. One of the main reasons I recovered and started bowling was training sessions with Julie and the confidence I gained from the training which included customized training sessions for various activities with support, advice, constant encouragement, dedication and attention minute details during workouts. Julie carefully selects workouts that suit different requirements.

I am running a half marathon in October 2016 and I decided to run only because I knew in my mind that Julie is there to help me get to that stage where I can manage to run along with playing cricket. From the time I started training sessions with Julie, it has given me immense confidence in myself to participate in any sport. Julie has motivated me to keep on playing and working out against all odds and I will continue doing that for rest of my life. I am already planning to run marathon next year...

After seriously hurting my back in 2014 I thought my love of exercise would be over. I lost confidence in my body and myself. I gained about 3 stone and couldn't look at myself in the mirror. Well... 2 years on and with the support, advice, encouragement, dedication and love of Julie I feel like my old self; in fact I feel better, fitter, healthier and stronger than ever.

Julie has given me the confidence and strength to heal both physically and emotionally. She has empowered me with the knowledge and skills to continue to maintain a healthy back, body and mind. I cannot thank her enough. Thank you Julie. Xxx

Julie helped me develop a strong positive attitude towards training especially during periods of darkness  when I was really struggling with what life was throwing at me. Exercise helped me get my thirst for life back and I hope I can set out to achieve my dream.

I can't recommend Julie highly enough. Two years ago I had health issues which resulted in my having 2 stent implants. Julie has a great deal of knowledge regarding cardio issues and has been fantastic in helping me get back to more or less full fitness. In fact my fitness age is now 11 years younger than my actual age!

The training sessions are tailored to the individual and incredibly varied. I never do the same workout twice as she knows I would get bored and I love turning up to her well equipped studio not knowing what she has planned for me. If you are looking for a personal trainer who really cares and is also a lot of fun, you've just found her.

I loved every minute of Julie's 21 day challenge and would highly recommend it to everyone.

With 2 children under 5 and a home based business, I was having fun but little time for myself and my health and energy levels were slipping. I was managing to fit in a little exercise but was also confused about foods and how to lose weight.

In 21 days I lost 10ibs and 10 inches and my overall wellbeing increased.
More than this, I love being back in control and making positive steps towards my health and happiness.

Even though we were working remotely, using Facebook and private messages, I felt very supported by Julie and the rest of the group.

I am not a set menu person and didn't think they would suit me but they really did and I have learnt how important planning is. Julie's programme provides delicious recipes for the whole day with plenty of variety. They saved time and made it easy to plan and very quickly banished my 16.00 carb cravings.

Julie posted daily short exercise videos to follow and topics to learn about. They made me realise that exercise doesn't need to be complicated.

Always leading by example, Julie is a real expert. She clearly helps to unravel mixed messages and provides simple solutions in a knowledgable, caring and encouraging way. Her energy and positivity is inspiring and I am very thankful for her help.

At 73 I am Julie's oldest client and take my word for it she doesn't treat me with kid gloves and make any concessions to my age.
I mainly have my P. T. sessions to ensure I keep fit and well as I get older,  for my body to be healthy and supple and for it to not make any restrictions in the way I live my life.
